Fly Away (2012)

Proud Annegret Simon is new to the retirement home. She doesn't particularly like the change of scenery. And rightly so, says Mr. Tiedgen, who would also rather live alone than be looked after. Exercise therapy and reading afternoons are the epitome of boredom for him. When the residents of the retirement home are invited on a sightseeing flight in a propeller plane, Tiedgen has an idea with which he hopes to impress the beautiful Annegret...

Rickards tries hard in a difficult role and Greg Germann offers nice support as an empathetic neighbor. But like her character, it's Broderick who keeps things from falling apart.

autism sucks. dealing with autistic people sucks. this movie didnt prove much else, or anything anyone didnt already know. BUT, it wasnt bad

Fly Away could have been stronger if its antiseptic visual style, which anchors it in old-fashioned TV movie mode, had been more adventurous in shouldering some of the weight of depicting the emotional and psychic anguish of the story.

Janet Grillo's modestly produced feature breaks no new ground in depicting those who live with autism -- both the afflicted and their loved ones.

This was hard to watch at times - I really felt for the mom. I couldn't imagine how hard it must be to raise an autistic child. It shows how patient and willing to sacrifice someone has to be. I love Ashley Rickards, ever since seeing her in Awkward. It was a very eye-opening movie though.
