The actors may give their all and the squirrel might indeed “stick the landing.” Flora & Ulysses still falls a little short of the mark.

Pudi plays officer Miller like one of the cocky cops from “Reno 911!” laughably tough-acting behind his tinted aviator specs. He’s effectively a human cartoon character in a movie that’s most appealing when it shifts over to hand-drawn comic frames, and silly as much of the mayhem is, Khan deserves credit for translating such slapstick to live action.

The only thing this movie has over a Hallmark channel original is that it has a really good cast, but everything else about it is so terrible, you won't even care that these performers are trying so hard to save this stinker. If you enjoy the Chipmunk movies, you might get a laugh from the CG squirrel antics.

Flora & Ulysses veers close to falling into the trap of cheesiness that kids’ movies of this genre often find themselves in, but miraculously never does. In fact, this hopeful comedy, in showing how a twitchy-tailed hero can change a family, lifts off and flies.

Bit of a waste, in the end. 'Flora & Ulysses' isn't a bad watch, but it doesn't utilise a cool premise or a strong showing from youngster Matilda Lawler. The latter fairly impressed me, especially early on. Behind her, Ben Schwartz is OK and Alyson Hannigan is, as seemingly always, likeable. Given how interesting the concept is, the film barely even touches on Ulysses' abilities - when they do, e.g. at the diner, then it is actually nicely created with the effects, slow motion et al. Instead they focus on a familial story, which didn't intrigue me whatsoever. I did like the comic book onscreen graphics, mind. Perhaps others will find enjoyment with this, fair enough if so. For me, though, it's average and forgettable.
