I really loved this movie and am finding it nearly impossible to articulate why. Perhaps the natural pacing of it, the calmness of cinematography during the craziness of life, Juliette Binoche being awesome... there's really no plot or no point, but its a beautiful movie nonetheless. Probably not for everyone, though, because its very slow.

If you're looking for a movie that embraces you into the story without much effort and without any fancy visual/sound effect, Hou Hsiao-hsien's movies are always the best. Each of our stories can be a great story. And this movie reflects our real life stories in such a subtle way. The whole movie is filled with quiet hints and nuances that reward the patient viewer with an emotionally rich conclusion. That red balloon is a floating notion about loneliness, urban beauty, and life complexity. Hou Hsiao-hsien has done some similar movies made in Taiwan. This is not his best but still an affectionate because that humanistic touch only a handful of contemporary cinema artists have to offer.

Quite good. Did not fill me with nostalgia for the Red Balloon as I had anticipated, but still... I was alone in the theater except for an elderly Chinese couple. Was hoping to get their opinion after, but they darted out. No one likes to hang out and talk about it after... thats what I get for going to Film School. Much like the eponymous ballon, this film floated a bit over my head.. either I missed a little something or something small was missing, but the film did not completely show itself to me. Hsien has been a recent must-watch for me, so I indulged in this recent addition. It's def. no Millenium Mambo.

A tender, innocent and meditative film that asks the viewer to see with child-like eyes. The long takes display astonishing acting talent and HHH's viewpoint is always assured yet filled with humility.

The flight of of the Red Balloon, the lastest fim by Taiwanese genius Hou Hsiao-hsien, is slow and quiet with plenty of activities. It looks like the movie is essentially plotless. Beginning a scene where The balloon is FREE to roam, the flight of the red balloon offers a startlingly advanced use of editing, a couple of ways to structure a scene. The result is unexpected rhythms and visual surprises. The flight of the red balloon is more like a rebirth of the film itself!
