Flight of the Red Balloon (2007)

The first part in a new series of films produced by Musée d'Orsay, 'Flight of the Red Balloon' tells the story of a French family as seen through the eyes of a Chinese student. The film was shot in August and September 2006 on location in Paris. This is Hou Hsiao-Hsien's first Western film. It is based on the classic French short The Red Balloon directed by Albert Lamorisse.

Great meandering images of Paris, lots of focus on reflection, and a neat little unresolved plot about life - layered with metaphor and jouissance. Negatives are Binoche and dialogue yet these sections did maintain a deeply realist feel. Hou is definitely one to watch.

The film works well as a portrait of a single parent struggling to deal with a problem tenant and keep her family together. Although Suzanne (Binoche) is depicted in a sympathetic light, she is a three-dimensional character and her troubles are not trivialised, nor are they resolved (at all) by the end of the film. What gives the film an extra dimension are the various poetic elements which accompany the telling of the tale: - the mythological stories of Chinese folklore which Suzanne reads out in her work in the puppet theatre; - the well-chosen words of affection between mother and son; - and of course the mysterious red balloon: does it exist only in Simon's imagination? can Song see it too, or does it only exist for her in terms of the film she is making? what does it signify?

like "the red balloon" this film is enchanting in its own way. the minimalism perfectly coincides with mysterious balloon allegory and gives the film a poetic feeling.

a lovely movie that combines french and asian cultures... ending was a bit confusing though.
