Resplendent, carefully crafted shots make a subject that is difficult to think about somewhat easier to watch. As a documentary without interviews, an explicit narrative, or even much of a story arc, this film somehow manages to avoid fitting into any traditional genre without coming off as unclear about its motives or once meandering in its method. The general criticism that it presents the inhabitants of the island and the refugees in artificial isolation from one another has some merit, but I think it let the film more sharply contrast the comfortable world that most of us live in and the extreme hardships which we generally prefer to ignore, regardless of how close to our own lives this other worlds actually exists.

All of the film’s constituent parts are superb (with the exception of the DJ segments, which do seem extraneous). It’s the pointedly unpointed way they’ve been assembled that gives pause.

Never preaching, Rosi leaves it for us to soak up these revelations. The result is sometimes wayward but peppered with images that sear the brain.

The director captures a sobering albeit methodical look at the horrid refugee crisis on a small island between Sicily and Tunisia. No angle is given and concentration is on telling the story. You are left to decide from what is given.
