Fata Morgana (1972)

Shot under extreme conditions and inspired by Mayan creation theory, the film contemplates the illusion of reality and the possibility of capturing for the camera something which is not there. It is about the mirages of nature—and the nature of mirage.

Almost overwhelmingly strange piece of film from Herzog - a description doesn't do it justice, but it's basically shots of the Sahara, the landscape, humans, human pollution, the strangest musical duo this side of a Lynch or Kaurismaki film, some weird sc-fi / Mad Max-style characters accompanied by first a Mayan creation myth spoken by German film historian Lotte Eisner scored with opera. Then we have some 60s folk from Blind Faith and Leonard Cohen along with some very random voice-over about concepts of paradise. Just very, very, very weird! I give it 5 for pure weirdness.

Another strange film by Werner Herzog and one of my least favorite ones so far. The best thing about it is actually Leonhard Cohen's music that is present from time to time. That and a lot of beautiful footage, but overall this one didn't touch me.

Beautiful. Completely original. Herzog makes docs like no other.

Totally baffling, but still kind of neat. It's no Lessons of Darkness, but I like it.

Herzog week: unclasifiable movie with powerful images and mayan creation myth as extremely loose "argument". Has a strange hypnotic grip
