Documents the lives of infamous fakers Elmyr de Hory and Clifford Irving. De Hory, who later committed suicide to avoid more prison time, made his name by selling forged works of art by painters like Picasso and Matisse. Irving was infamous for writing a fake autobiography of Howard Hughes. Welles moves between documentary and fiction as he examines the fundamental elements of fraud and the people who commit fraud at the expense of others.

Possibly Welles' best film, and certainly his most profound. 'F for Fake' is an oddly metaphysical faux-documentary about art and forgery that is required viewing for any aesthetics class. It is also a highly auto-biographical film that sums up Welles' lifework. A genuine masterpiece and a grand swansong from the revered auteur.

Is it a documentary? Is it fiction? Is it original? Is it a hoax? More importantly: does it matter? Orson Welles impresses me, yet again, with a masterful film that made me reconsider how much does originality have to do with art. A film that can be appreciated by anybody that's pretentious enough to have considered themselves an "artist" at some point - if we should be pretentious for calling ourselves that. Entirely brilliant.

It's impossible not to have a welles in such a list. This one is not as famous as Kane, but is as brilliant. Arf, there is also the lady from Shangai... It's too difficult.
