Documents the lives of infamous fakers Elmyr de Hory and Clifford Irving. De Hory, who later committed suicide to avoid more prison time, made his name by selling forged works of art by painters like Picasso and Matisse. Irving was infamous for writing a fake autobiography of Howard Hughes. Welles moves between documentary and fiction as he examines the fundamental elements of fraud and the people who commit fraud at the expense of others.

There is no comparison to this film in terms of editing. This is it. This is as good as it gets, and nothing has come close, ever.

An exploration into the larcenies committed by several notorious individuals is also a personal biography and confession from Welles, whom pulled a few pranks in his day and shows that he can still do it. It can get confusing at times as Welles tries to interwine both the facts and the lies together, but it is fascinating and dazzlingly made.

Another one of my favorite movies ever and definitely one of the most brilliant documentaries ever made, which questions the nature of artistic and cinematic truth. Welles always billed himself as a kind of trickster and illusionist, and this challenging, entertaining, and thought-provoking exposition explores all that means. Many documentary filmmakers could learn a great deal from Welles' witty handling of the dilemmas of the genre.
