F for Fake (1973)

Documents the lives of infamous fakers Elmyr de Hory and Clifford Irving. De Hory, who later committed suicide to avoid more prison time, made his name by selling forged works of art by painters like Picasso and Matisse. Irving was infamous for writing a fake autobiography of Howard Hughes. Welles moves between documentary and fiction as he examines the fundamental elements of fraud and the people who commit fraud at the expense of others.

I love Orson Welles, but this one I come back to more than the others he directed. One of the things I love about Welles in general is how much he loves the sound of his own voice. Luckily for us, he is at the top of his game here so the constant presence of the director is just one of the great parts of a fantastic whole. I cannot describe this any better than the summary, except to tell anyone thinking about watching this that you should be prepared for something that will be a little hard to follow at first, but stick with it. As magic as Memento or The Prestige, but without any contrivances of story or plot. I am soooooooooooo serious.

Possibly Welles' best film, and certainly his most profound. 'F for Fake' is an oddly metaphysical faux-documentary about art and forgery that is required viewing for any aesthetics class. It is also a highly auto-biographical film that sums up Welles' lifework. A genuine masterpiece and a grand swansong from the revered auteur.

Another one of my favorite movies ever and definitely one of the most brilliant documentaries ever made, which questions the nature of artistic and cinematic truth. Welles always billed himself as a kind of trickster and illusionist, and this challenging, entertaining, and thought-provoking exposition explores all that means. Many documentary filmmakers could learn a great deal from Welles' witty handling of the dilemmas of the genre.

This film may be impossible to classify, but Orson Welles shows that he was a master at making films with this work. In this fake documentary about fakes, forgery, and fraud, Welle's utilizes his subject of deceit to further examine the subjectivity of truth. Captivating and thought-provoking, this film is truly a one of a kind experience.

Outstandingly weird movie from Orson Welles. Probably his best, no shit.
