Jeanne Moreau looks stunning in this Joseph Losey-tribute to her, which makes up in cinematography what it lacks in script.

Moreau gives a memorable performance in this otherwise pretty hollow and overtly stylized film. Still, Losey's interesting even when he's trying too hard with heavy symbolism and quotes from the Bible. The longer 120 min Scandinavian version didn't seem to add much to the film - a good 50 mins is told to be lost forever.

Gros gros ennui, malgre Jeanne Moreau et surtout Virna Lisi. Decidemment, le cinema de Losey n'est pas fait pour moi.

Losey's original version is apparently lost in the mists of time, and what remains does not give us much of a clue as to its genius.
