This film was way too tedious and long for a extremely simple concept: the rise and fall of a theater actress.

Begins as a shadowy film that progresses from dark to increasing light. It has been stunningly photographed by Eric Gautier and has a wonderfully expressive score composed by Howard Shore.

"Esther kahn" est long. Long comme une gestation qui n'enfinirait pas d'arriver Ã son terme. Embryon,Esther est une petite chose insignifiante, improbable. Lorsque foetus, elle s'accroche Ã cette vie dont elle ignore tout, Esther devient Ã©trange, prometteuse. La veille de sa naissance son cordon ombilical a failli l'Ã©trangler et c'est finalement dans la douleur qu'Esther dÃ©couvre la lumiere. Domage que Desplechin ait rate cette naissance.

Like its title character, Esther Kahn is unusual but unfortunately also irritating.

The narrator and the other characters try to convince us that acting transfigures Esther, but she's never seen speaking on stage; one feels cheated, and Esther seems to remain an unchanged dullard.
