Equus (1977)

A psychiatrist, Martin Dysart, investigates the savage blinding of six horses with a metal spike in a stable in Hampshire, England. The atrocity was committed by an unassuming seventeen-year-old stable boy named Alan Strang, the only son of an opinionated but inwardly-timid father and a genteel, religious mother. As Dysart exposes the truths behind the boy's demons, he finds himself face-to-face with his own.

The closest I can come to seeing the play... beautifully translated into film, one of my favorites.

Probably the greatest adaptation of a play to a movie, which is interesting considering the theatricality of Equus. Richard Burton and Peter Firth give two of the greatest performances ever in a film. A film that is daringly faithful to its source material, while utilizing the opportunity of film to strengthen the work. Sidney Lumet further proves why he is one of the greatest of all directors.

I was a child when I first saw it, but I hadn't remembered it until 2 or 3 months ago that I watched it again. It's great, wear, but great.

This film is based on the celebrated play by Peter Shaffer. I've not seen the play but after watching this film I would very much like to see it. Burton is on top form as is Firth. It's an excellent view into the mind and certainly one of Burton's better films in his later career. All the supporting cast, especially Blakely as Alan Strang's father is very restrained. The film does make for uncomfortable viewing but that's the whole point of the play.
