Equus (1977)

A psychiatrist, Martin Dysart, investigates the savage blinding of six horses with a metal spike in a stable in Hampshire, England. The atrocity was committed by an unassuming seventeen-year-old stable boy named Alan Strang, the only son of an opinionated but inwardly-timid father and a genteel, religious mother. As Dysart exposes the truths behind the boy's demons, he finds himself face-to-face with his own.

The blinding of horses is something that works a great deal better as stage symbolism than as cinematic fact, and that's one of the several things wrong with the way Equus has been brought to the screen.

Slow at the start, but give it a chance...the Dr's comments about passion leave the viewer with something to consider.

This film is based on the celebrated play by Peter Shaffer. I've not seen the play but after watching this film I would very much like to see it. Burton is on top form as is Firth. It's an excellent view into the mind and certainly one of Burton's better films in his later career. All the supporting cast, especially Blakely as Alan Strang's father is very restrained. The film does make for uncomfortable viewing but that's the whole point of the play.

One of the most disturbing movies I've seen (although admitedly when I first saw this movie on cable I had little idea of what it was about). The main story is about a boy who really likes horses, and is interspersed with soliloquies from his psychiatrist who's lamenting his own life, while questioning whether psychiatry should be used to cure people of their passions just because society might view them as disgusting and abnormal.

Great British movie (one of the few). It leaves you in a weird state. Loved it.
