Epidemic (1975)

The film evokes the era of the 1831 cholera epidemic and the peasant uprising which followed it. The way of Doctor Balás, cholera commissioner, and district administrator Hunyor leads through the mountains of Zemplén and is lined by unburied corpses, peasants dying of the illness and of overdoses of bismuth, by the miserably starving population, the healthy digging mass-graves and by uncultivated lands.

Disappointing follow up to von Trier's "The Element of Crime" Pretentious and tediously meandering, the film takes a decent concept and drags it out with unnecessary scenes of improv. Takes too long to get to its decent ending.

The scenes from Epidemic have the high-contrast look of a 1920s horror film, are in English (much of it badly dubbed) and feature images that are handsome and preposterous in equal parts -- they're amusing, and too stylized to be disturbing.

An intelligent, beautiful, disturbing work on the nature of film and reality. Dark and brilliantly photographed. Another engaging work by Trier, not wholly accessible for the average film goer, but for the cultured Cineaste out there a real treat.

Puzzling and unpleasant Conceptual film from Von Trier that proves his prowess at mastering unusual subject matter and low budget's to achieve some truly challenging and confrontational moments.
