Since he was 5 yrs old, Jose's abuelita taught him to play chess like his grandfather who was a champion in Mexico. Now as part of the Brownsville school team, Jose has the chance to use his skills and for once in his life, finds himself in the spotlight, as he tries to help his team make it to the Texas state finals. As their coach, Mr. Alvarado, teaches his students the meaning of perseverance and team effort in the face of adversity, Jose discovers his own strengths and uses them to bring his broken family together.

There isn't a single surprising development or unforeseen story turn in "Endgame," and yet, as a study in formulaic Screenwriting 101 filmmaking, it's really rather pleasant and sometimes surprisingly moving.

AS A BROWNSVILLIAN, nothing hits home more than his movie! Even I found myself sitting at my school desk only to bed recognized as the little sister of the trouble making yet ALL STAR FOOTBALL PLAYER. I was never called by my name but by "his little sister". To this day I am nothing like him. Brownsville is well known for it poverty and immigration issues. We all know it. So when we are recognized for something positive we are ecstatic! I just want to thank everyone that was involved in making this movie. You showcased Brownsville in a wonderful inspiring way. I am proud to be From a town that, although we are bound to fail against all odds, we triump through the oppression. BROWNSVILLE IS THE ULIMATE UNDERDOG.

Endgame tries to be about many important issues, and ends up doing none of them justice.

The otherwise congenial film plays itself to a draw because of flat characters and a script that overdoes the melodrama in the service of checking off a series of genre tropes borrowed from sports movies.
