I believe this was Allan King's final documentary and it is a fitting end to a stellar career. Growing up in Scarborough, you can't help but be aware of the issues between the police and the black community in the north. The work of Brian Harvey is a ray of hope in a community stuck in a cycle of crime.

Although King's documentary follows a committed community volunteer working to keep at-risk Scarborough youth in school, any hint of a hopeful trajectory is dashed first by the lack of interest/engagement on the part of his uncommunicative charges and finally by well-earned outbursts of frustration and despair. Valuable also (at least to Torontonians) for its local colour, bringing the headlines down to a human level.
