This movie was beautifully animated and shows a great deal of imagination just in scene layouts and backgrounds. The characters are well defined and the story is, ultimately about love and family. A strong entry in the Pixar films and a strong turnaround after the disappointing Lightyear movie.

With its preachy, dull love story between a boy made of water and a girl on fire, Elemental should have been called “Guess Who’s Coming to Disney.”

In Elemental, we have a visually splendid and absolutely gorgeous rendering of a half-baked idea. For some of its running time, it can get by on looks. But ultimately, things like story and making sense start to matter, and that’s when the movie takes on water.

This animated drama takes place in Element City, where fire, water, earth and air live side-by-side, but not together. When a fire family immigrates to the city, Ember, the daughter, befriends a young water guy, Wade. This cultural conflict is a surprising plot for a Pixar film and it's handled with sensitivity. Some of the typical animation elements are missing; no wacky sidekick, no elaborate musical numbers and only minimal action scenes. On the other side, the generation of the creatures with their constantly moving facets is continually beautiful and fascinating. This is primarily a sweet, heartfelt romance with lovely visuals.
