Ebirah, Horror of the Deep (1966)

Searching for his brother, Ryota stows away on a boat belonging to a criminal alongside two other teenagers. The group shipwrecks on Letchi island and discover the Infant Island natives have been enslaved by a terrorist organization controlling a crustacean monster. Finding a sleeping Godzilla, they decide to awaken him to defeat the terrorists and liberate the natives.

The most interesting color palate of any Godzilla film, probably because this was originally going to star King Kong, but all in all this was a lot of fun, and the island was a welcome change in scenery from the usual Japanese populated area.

Man is polluting the oceans and the air, and were going to pay the price...by being destroyed by monsters...maybe were the Monsters?

A giant shrimp shows up from out of nowhere in the seas around an island populated by James Bond villains who also show up from out of nowhere. Then Godzilla shows up from out of nowhere too, and proceeds to stomp the former two. This film is where the series starting going downhill, with more and more cheesiness. And I did mention that the titular sea monster is a giant shrimp, right?

For years I couldn't stand this movie, thought it was one of the weaker Godzilla films. Well, it's not one of the best, but the DVD version released in the US a couple years ago is MUCH better than the VHS/television copies I grew up on, restoring several minutes of cut footage that showcases a much longer and better battle between Godzilla and Ebirah. A dusty, dirty Mothra prop returns in the final moments for a disappointingly breif cameo appearence, but decent performances from the human cast (including Toho favorite Kumi Mizuno) help move the story along. A giant lobster/shrimp hybrid (And a giant condor in a forgettable scene) doesn't make the best opponent for Godzilla, but, this was originally envisioned as a King Kong film. Once the script was written, however, that idea fell through and Godzilla was inserted in Kong's place. Part monster mash, part James Bond and part Robinson Curuso, and all in all, it ain't bad.

Godzilla develops a taste for seafood as he fights and rips the claws off of a giant lobster. In between beating up Ebirah the Lobster, Godzilla also flirts with an island girl and tramples a secret commie base, just making it out before a nuclear explosion. Throw in a cameo by Mothra, and you have a decent Godzilla movie, but nothing special.
