East Side Story (2006)

Diego is a gay but closeted Hispanic chef living in East Los Angeles who works in the restaurant operated by his grandmother. This is the other story that wasn't told the same time that Quincenera was happening. It's such a sweeeeet movie. Cheesy at times, but definitely worth a watch. I haven't felt as good after a gay movie since Trick. Oh, and it didn't hurt that the guys in it are hot! Especially Rene Alvarado. Sizzle!

Put your shirts back on and spend some time writing a script.

I saw this movie on the merit of it's very persuasive trailer... big mistake. In actuality the movie is cumbersome and long winded with several banal performances from the lead actors. Though Diego's crazy aunt Blanca and Grandmother lend some watchability to this flick it's not something I'd rush off to see again.

East Side Story works as a nice companion piece to the recent indie hit Quinceanera, and is a much lighter (yet sometimes offensive) offering. The performances are stellar, especially Mr. Alvarado and Ms. Jimenez. Although I enjoyed the movie as a whole, I would've liked for Mr. Portugal to have created a story that tried to diminish stereotypes between gays and Latinos, instead of sometimes tastelessly perpetuating them. Regardless, East Side Story is a terrific movie, and it's nice to see two openly gay actors like Steve Callahan and Corey Schneider in starring roles.
