humane and moving, beautifully photographed, lots of tiny details you won't fully pick up til you've seen it several times but which all subliminally add to the emotional weight. this is a perfect film in every way.

This is one of my favourite films. It is chilling and atmospheric from the start. The menacing tension is always in the background, threatening and beguiling at the same time. Brilliant.

Incredible. I haven't lost myself in a film like this in ages, and it demands a second viewing (a second viewing that will be even more rewarding than the first). The title so accurately describes the film that it is almost comical. The idea of 'paying close attention' to a film takes on a whole new meaning in Roeg's masterpiece. It's billed as 'A Psychic Thriller' but it may be THE psychic thriller and is handled brilliantly by Roeg.

beautiful, intricate direction with fabulous acting. superb blend of creepy, suspenseful, and sexy. honestly, this rating is somewhat tentative - I'm not sure how I feel about the ending. it certainly was surprising, and risky. it's a startling shift in tone from the rest of the film, which certainly makes it all the more memorable.

Famous for one of the most erotic love scenes ever put to film, this horror film is one of the most terrifying movies I have ever seen in my life. Christie and Sutherland are in Venice where he's restoring a church; though they're really getting away from the tragic drowning of their young daughter. Once in Venice, strange people enter their lives and strange things start to occur. The artistry and nuance in Roeg's direction is beyond brilliant - and his use of a wintry Venice as a menacing atmospheric backdrop for the story is genius. Never has a film been so deliberately paced to lead you to such utter dread. The shocking climax still manages to leave me completely unnerved.
