Descendant (2022)

History exists beyond what is written. The Africatown residents in Mobile, Alabama, have shared stories about their origins for generations. Their community was founded by enslaved ancestors who were transported in 1860 aboard the last known and illegal slave ship, Clotilda. Though the ship was intentionally destroyed upon arrival, its memory and legacy weren't. Now, the long-awaited discovery of the Clotilda's remains offers this community a tangible link to their ancestors and validation of a history so many tried to bury.

With Descendant, filmmaker Margaret Brown finds poetry where most would see the opportunity for a polemic.

Brian Lowry 21 Oct 2022

A bit slow-moving at first, the history gives way to a thoughtful conversation about how best to remember this history and honor its victims, while simultaneously highlighting the modern science surrounding identifying the ship and, thanks to DNA, potentially linking its captives to their descendants.

Josh Larsen 19 Dec 2022

Whenever someone wants to downplay historical atrocities, Descendant suggests, it’s because they’re also trying to cover up injustice in the present day.

Jake Coyle 20 Oct 2022

There is a searching, ruminative dialogue running throughout the film. Brown and editors Michael Bloch and Geoffrey Richman beautifully weave together disparate voices into a meditative chorus.

Lisa Kennedy 21 Oct 2022

If you’ve ever wondered what “holding space” looks like in practice, the director Margaret Brown’s deeply attentive documentary Descendant provides moving examples.
