Contrived murder mystery focusing on the mysterious death of the esteemed Spanish poet and playwright Federico Garcia Lorca.

I have loved this film since I first saw it ten years ago. At that time it was a hint to me that Andy Garcia was developing into a serious actor with a serious artistic vision. So for the record, let me point out that Garcia has since done a trio of biographical films, all representing the artist in conflict with society. They are: 1) The Disappearance of Garcia Lorca (1998); 2) For Love or Country: The Arturo Sandoval Story (2001); and 3) Modigliani (2004). These works, all biographies of ethnic heavyweights, told of the turbulent lives of a Spanish poet/playwright, a Cuban jazz musician and a Spanish painter. All were terrific and although I recommend all three, this one is my favorite. Each of these titles is available through the Great Red Envelope whose name cannot be spoken.

Well-intentioned and sincere in its adoration of Lorca, but this film's script is not very tightly woven and Andy Garcia as Lorca was a rather poor choice--he just doesn't come across as a poetic soul. Nice twist ending, though. With all its faults, still worth a watch. It does show the anti-intectualism of totalitarian governments.
