Crush (2002)

Three 40-something women in a small English town meet weekly for a ritual of gin, cigarettes, and sweets -- and swapped stories arguing which of them has the most pathetic love life. Kate is headmistress at the local school; her best friends are the town's police chief and a cynical, thrice-divorced doctor.

The most depressing movie I've seen all year; in fact, I'm hard-pressed to name a movie aimed specifically at women that has ever made me feel as insulted and disgusted.

Crush has some merit, especially in the visuals, but it's trapped somewhere between the world of psychological horror films and the world of hand-wringing arthouse melodramas, and it never really settles into either groove.

Michael Atkinson 01 Apr 2002

Manipulative tragedy, muddled motivations, incongruous reconciliations, deranged cuteness, all of it directed with a tin ear and laden with a score that evokes the experience of a conditioned lab rat.

Anyway, for one reason or another, Crush turns into a dire drama partway through. After that, it just gets stupid and maudlin. Too bad, but thanks to some lovely comedic moments and several fine performances, it's not a total loss.

Oh God, how I love the old chick flicks! And some of the new ones, like Crush, aren't that bad either.
