Growing up on Staten Island, children had often heard the legend of 'Cropsey.' For the kids in their neighborhood, Cropsey was the escaped mental patient who lived in the old abandoned Willowbrook Mental Institution, who would come out late at night and snatch children off the streets. Sometimes Cropsey had a hook for a hand, other times he wielded a bloody axe. Cropsey was always out there waiting to get them. Later as teenagers, filmmakers Joshua and Barbara assumed Cropsey was just an... urban legend of their youth has actually come true, two filmmakers delve into the mystery behind five missing children and the real-life boogeyman linked to their disappearance in their hometown of Staten Island, New York. Documentary of a spate of child kidnappings/killings in Staten Island, New York, in the 1970s, tied thematically to the titular Hudson Valley boogeyman myth.

I think I was attracted to it under a few mislead pretenses, however, Cropsey is a fantastic documentary that is chilling.

Creepy and mysterious, this documentary is streamlined even though the auteur's hand is clearly seen. It is a great meeting of passive folklore and the real-world consequences of the mystery, prejudice, manipulation, and speculation that surrounds the issue at hand. While some ends were left loose, I found it an overall intriguing film.

A very well made documentary, based on the mystery of several disappearances. The soundtrack only elevates its creepiness, the script follows a well-laid-out timeline, and though the mystery is never fully solved, the ending serves as a fairly good "resolution." My only complaint? Due to the fact that the case was never fully "solved" or "justified," the movie a times can feel repetitive (though this is only infrequently the case). Overall, a highly effective documentary thriller, that will keep you puzzling over the possibilities long after the movie has ended (83%).
