Crisis: Behind a Presidential Commitment (1963)

During a two-day period before and after the University of Alabama integration crisis, the film uses five camera crews to follow President John F. Kennedy, attorney general Robert F. Kennedy, Alabama governor George Wallace, deputy attorney general Nicholas Katzenbach and the students Vivian Malone and James Hood. As Wallace has promised to personally block the two black students from enrolling in the university, the JFK administration discusses the best way to react to it, without rousing the crowd or making Wallace a martyr for the segregationist cause. Preserved by the Academy Film Archive in partnership with The Film Foundation in 1999.

A lot of hurry up and wait. I was bored and waiting for something more exciting to happen, but it never did.

A fascinating look at the structure of the Kennedy administration, and the way in which film can simultaneously capture a historical event from multiple geographic locations.

A stolen moment torn from jealous seconds' grasp in a manner never achieved before and seldom since-we share the world with four people and a president as they grapple for the manner in which to change the course of a nation and its conscience, to re-frame right, to unbind doors no matter how many hard hearts my stand before them. You are in the oval office, the governor's mansion, the office of the NAACP as Americans strategize how an encounter on the steps of the University of Alabama will proceed and who will walk away unsatisfied.

Absorbing and well made, "Crisis" does more in its 53 minutes than many films try to do with twice as much time.

A grand, multifaceted documentary that seems to play out in real time.
