Crime After Crime (2011)

The story of the battle to free Debbie Peagler, an incarcerated survivor of brutal domestic violence. Over 26 years in prison cannot crush the spirit of this determined African-American woman, despite the injustices she has experienced, first at the hands of a duplicitous boyfriend who beat her and forced her into prostitution, and later by prosecutors who cornered her into a life behind bars for her connection to the murder of her abuser. Her story takes an unexpected turn two decades later when a pair of rookie land-use attorneys cut their teeth on her case -- and attract global attention to the troubled intersection of domestic violence and criminal justice.

It's really disheartening that so many people are in jail because they had to protect themselves from serious abuse. This is one woman's story of serving her time for a murder she was involved in (i.e.,the murder of her abuser), and then an attempt to get her out of a life sentence she didn't deserve. The best part is actually that Steve Cooley, the attorney general who knew of her abuse and kept her in jail anyway, was not re-elected.

With good reason this film received seven standing ovations at Sundance! It's personal, emotional and uncovers shameful things about our legal system. Footage taken within a prison, let alone one of the biggest maximum security women's prisons in the world, is impossible to get so this was a huge coup for the filmmaker. Should be required viewing.

One of the best documentary of all times. It is a heartbreaking, incisive, and warm portrayal of Deborah Peagler. It also chronicles the corrupt, criminal justice system in LA County.

Though rife with talking-head interviews and straightforwardly shot, the movie is quietly riveting and cumulatively galling.

Much time, money and propaganda is spent to convince us how free we are here in America. Every once in a while, we need to be reminded that we are not superior in any way and that our government is just as corrupt as the worst of them. This is one of those times, so grab a box of tissues and hit play.
