The story of the battle to free Debbie Peagler, an incarcerated survivor of brutal domestic violence. Over 26 years in prison cannot crush the spirit of this determined African-American woman, despite the injustices she has experienced, first at the hands of a duplicitous boyfriend who beat her and forced her into prostitution, and later by prosecutors who cornered her into a life behind bars for her connection to the murder of her abuser. Her story takes an unexpected turn two decades later when a pair of rookie land-use attorneys cut their teeth on her case -- and attract global attention to the troubled intersection of domestic violence and criminal justice.

This gripping independent film provides a rare and intimate look at the legal battle to free someone who has been wronged by the criminal justice system. It's more dramatic and emotionally powerful than anything I've seen in years. I don't want to spoil anything, but it has several significant plot twists, and the people in it are absolutely riveting. The music is great too, much better than most movie music.

It's really disheartening that so many people are in jail because they had to protect themselves from serious abuse. This is one woman's story of serving her time for a murder she was involved in (i.e.,the murder of her abuser), and then an attempt to get her out of a life sentence she didn't deserve. The best part is actually that Steve Cooley, the attorney general who knew of her abuse and kept her in jail anyway, was not re-elected.

As cinema, Crime After Crime is nothing special. It would be perfect for a PBS "Frontline" entry. But it reminds us, once again, that little can be quite so riveting as a well-told story from a compelling talking head.

It's no wonder so many young people hate upper class people in charge and distrust them. This is one of the more shameful things I have ever seen done to a poor person of any race, but so often poor black people get the shaft. This show was infuriating and heartbreaking at the same time, and bless those attorneys who help these people get the justice they so deserve.
