Completing his wonderful French cultural trilogy that also includes portraits of the Comédie-Fran¸aise and the Paris Opera Ballet, indefatigable documentarian Frederick Wiseman freely, unobtrusively prowls the joint to create a movie that respects the serious work involved in simulating the sensations of pleasure.

It is pretty, but it is very slow and the story development is lacking. It was hard to follow where it was going. There aren't any compelling characters and I just didn't care what was going to happen. And nothing really happened. Boring. But pretty.

A lesser film from this director, in part because it defaults on the one thing Wiseman's always been good for (a sense of the geography and ambience of a place, not just its lighting choices), in part because it raises yet again a regular criticism of Wiseman's work as an observer of individuals. We're no closer to the film's human subjects at the end of "Crazy Horse" than we were at the beginning, which is newly problematic in this context, because the camera starts to reduce the dancers, in particular, to a series of gyrating behinds. The film is at once revealing and not revealing enough.

Very slow and deliberately paced, but some of the most beautiful shots I have ever seen...most of which can be attributed to the women and the club "artistry." Also unique because there is no narration track to hold your hand throughout, which some may find unnerving...but this is quite easy to warm up to. Overall, an important and extremely captivating take on the beauty and art of the female form, and how this legendary club has truly tapped into sharing this effectively with their clients.
