Crack in the World (1965)

Dr. Steven Sorenson plans to tap the geothermal energy of the Earth's interior by means of a thermonuclear device detonated deep within the Earth. This experiment causes a crack to form and grow within the Earth's crust, which threatens to split the earth in two if it is not stopped in time.

Must see for prospective geologists. Dead on science (NOT)

An entertaining though typically 50s/60s disaster movie that plays it pretty straight. A great performance from movie legend Dana Andrews and some decent effects make it worthwhile.

Harness geothermal energy by firing an atomic missile into the Earth, then halt the resulting cataclysm by nuking a volcano! Lots of fun to be had here with a romantic triangle between two hilariously hard men of science and the hair-helmeted woman who loves them. Dana Andrews lays on the bluster in an agreeable manner, making his disintegration all the more amusing.

Almost a decade before plate tectonics and the Energy Crisis, this ambitious low budget disaster film is decades ahead of its time. Dueling scientists seeking perpetual clean energy in the Earth's magma start a running crack that threatens to destroy the Earth. The romance echoes "When Worlds Collide" and the ending begs for a coda, but this screams for a 21st Century reboot. Highly recommended.

So the science portion in this science fiction/end-of-the-world-disaster/melodrama is a bit... dated (to be kind... as we now know there's quite a few cracks in the world) it's pretty thrilling and the ending, consisting of a new Earth satellite being born out of a huge chunk of planet being hurled into space, is just plain awesome.
