Contemporary Color (2016)

In the summer of 2015, legendary musician David Byrne staged an event at Brooklyn's Barclays Center to celebrate the art of Color Guard: synchronized dance routines involving flags, rifles, and sabers. Recruiting performers that include the likes of St. Vincent, Nelly Furtado, Ad-Rock, and Ira Glass to collaborate on original pieces with 10 color guard teams from across the US and Canada, Contemporary Color is a beautifully filmed snapshot of a one-of-a-kind live event.

The result yields a film chock-full of enthusiastic people and talented performances that nonetheless falls short in harnessing the power (and delivering the narrative punch) otherwise present.

Jason Bailey 25 Apr 2016

This movie is just bursting with joy, and it's impossible not to get swept up in it.

Shane Slater 01 Mar 2017

Bursting with the energy of live performance and the impressive artistic synergy of music, dance and acrobatics, this is a visual feast of epic proportions.

Lauren Carroll Harris 23 Jun 2016

The moments when Contemporary Colour diverts from the onstage performances and moves to abstraction are the brightest.

Glenn Kenny 28 Feb 2017

Over all, this movie is less “you are there” than “you had to be there.”
