Okay, for a start, I have to just say that Franco Nero and Tomas Milian are both just a fucking DELIGHT in this film, which is peppered throughout with some impressive gunplay and humor. Jack Palance plays a vicious villain and I just dug this one from start to finish. Well worth a rental if you get the chance.

When I first started watching this western, I was expecting a comedy along the lines of the Trinity movies, and I was disappointed. The second time I decided to start watching the movie, I watched it without that misconception, thinking of it as an adventure film instead, and it was much better than I thought before. There is a fair amount of huimor here, but it comes from the movie's light tone and the way the lines are delivered, and occasionally from the witty script, rather than the all-out slapstick comedy of They Call Me Trinity or the Three Stooges. Companeros is a fun, exciting movie, and it has one of my favorite soundtracks by Ennio Morricone. I don't think it's as good as For a Few Dollars More, or The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, but it's not far down from them. It emphasizes fun and action over the style and beauty of Leone's movies. One of the best Italian westerns I've seen.

You really can't go wrong when Nero and Corbucci get together. Throw Tomas Milian and Jack Palance and the mix and you've got a treasure that may just be one of the best spaghetti westerns ever made. Not to mention that goddamn catchy Morricone theme song.

Rarely a dull moment in this brutal and very un-PC revolution western. The ingredients for an excellent spaghetti are all there: Nero, Milian, Morricone, Corbucci... Even if none of them are at their best here, it is still a memorable movie.

Maybe you want to see it because Jack Palance plays a marajuana addicted villain with a metal hand, who - when he's not planning creative death sentences - pets his pet hawk named marsha and brushes back his long, luxurious hair.
