Compañeros (1970)

Arms dealer Yolaf Peterson aims to make a sale to guerilla Mongo, but the money is locked in a bank safe, the combination known only to Professor Xantos, a prisoner of the Americans. Yolaf agrees to free Xantos, accompanied by reluctant guerilla Basco, but a former business partner of Yolaf's- John 'The Wooden Hand', has other ideas.

I think that this is my favorite of all the non-Leone spaghetti Westerns. It has some cult craziness (Jack Palance who smokes pot, has a fake hand and a weird attachment to a pet bird), but it's clever, funny, boisterous and has an anti-capitalist political message that's not too subtle (vamos a matar, compaÃ±eros means "let's go kill, comrades"). In this film, at the end of the day, violent revolution is the only solution to the excesses of imperialist capitalist oppression.

Maybe you want to see it because Jack Palance plays a marajuana addicted villain with a metal hand, who - when he's not planning creative death sentences - pets his pet hawk named marsha and brushes back his long, luxurious hair.

Corbucci spesso viene paragonato vicino a Sergio leone, mi spiace per Corbucci ma Leone è un vero genio, lui sicuramente sa fare il suo lavoro ma la carica che riesce a mettere nelle scene Leone è qualcosa di incredibile. Non ho visto molti film di questo regista, ma sicuramente tra quelli che ho visto questo è quello più riuscito.

This is my personal favorite (non-Leone) Spaghetti Western. The movie never takes itself seriously but never crosses the "too corny" line. The film is a more humurous Western than most but does not downplay it's serious message on the nature of the Mexican revolution. Nero and Milian play great off each other and Jack Palance is perfectly hammy. The morricone score, while not being his best, is perfect for the film and the main theme is definitely one of his most memorable (once you've actually heard it). western fans looking to find a new gem would do well to check this one out.
