Chuck Berry: Hail! Hail! Rock 'n' Roll (1987)
St. Louis, 1986. For Chuck Berry's 60th, Keith Richards assembles a pickup band of Robert Cray, Joey Spampinato, Eric Clapton, himself and long-time Berry pianist, Johnnie Johnson. Joined on stage by Etta James, Linda Ronstadt and Julian Lennon, Berry performs his classic rock songs. His abilities as a composer, lyricist, singer, musician and entertainer are on display and, in behind-the-scenes interviews, are discussed by Bo Diddley, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Bruce Springstein, the Everly Brothers, Roy Orbison and others. There's even a rarity for Berry—a rehearsal. Archival footage from the early 1950s and a duet with John Lennon round out this portrait of a master.

A really great concert film and if you didn't know anything about Chuck Berry going into it, it's a tremendous introduction (a sign of any good documentary). You get a chance to see Chuck on stage, recording, being a regular human being and everything in between. Outside of his refusal to discuss his legal problems and run-ins with the law, which, I believe were overshadowed by his musical career, it doesn't take away from giving you a really in-depth look at the man behind the legend, both good and bad.

Strange to admit, but the very Father of modern Rock'n'Roll would be lost without his soul-son, Keith Richards. Keith does it all. He puts up maybe the best rock'n'roll band ever: Spampinato on bass and Jordan on drums are simply incredible. Johhny Johnson and Bobby Keys make the rest. Excellent guest stars and a supreme set. And then Chuck gives his best. Saint Louise goes crazy for an amazing concert to celebrate the 60th birthday of His Majesty, Chuck Berry! Don't dare miss it...

Does just what the title says--and with great spunk.

Ultimately, though, it's the music that really matters, and Hackford certainly doesn't deny his audience that pleasure.
