Rare glimpse into the lives of those living in the past.

i can understand the effect this film has had on cinema, and i know how innovative it was at the time. that said, it was very hard for me to sit through the movie. the two filmmakers are so proud to be doing something so new, so revolutionary and get stuck on that fact. the subjects are affected parisians. there were few natural and poignant subjects, and too far apart. definitely influential, but there are better examples of cinema verite.

It drags a little too much, but after seeing this on Monday for my Film 202 I felt very connected to it. The film presents people from 1960's middle class France. We hear about their issues, and where they would like to be, and shockingly it feels a lot like America today. The parallels are uncanny and watching it through today's US eyes makes it all the more intriguing.

One of the most important documentaries in the history of the cinema, and a pleasure to watch even now. Rouch is striving for a purely objective film experience here, and though his interviewees all seem remarkably capitalist the selection still feels diverse. What's extraordinary is how unfamiliar Rouch is in his own country after becoming so comfortable making films in foreign lands. The people in this film behave kindly, cruelly, naively and confidently, but never look staged or showy. A great experiment by a great experimentor.
