Shia LaBeouf gives an astonishing performance, which bolsters the chemistry he shares with Evan Rachel Wood. The most admirable aspect of the film is the central love story, but Charlie Countryman fails to attain a steady plot, which is such a mess that certain key aspects of the drama are overlooked. However, if you pay attention solely to the drama portion, Charlie Countryman will satisfy you.

Shia LaBeouf is well-cast in this freewheeling combination of comedy, romance and action. He plays a scruffy guy with no plans and nothing to lose, lost in a strange culture while falling in love with the wrong woman.

Really glad what Mr. LaBeouf has done with his adult career. Even though Holes will always be a classic it's incredible to see him now (pretending though he wasn't in Transformers). After seeing him in a Sigur Ros experimental short film contest for one of their songs, I was shocked. After seeing this I will always hold him high in favorite actors. Lots of abstract lights, whirling shots, and sadness. A beautiful vision of all the things going well for new films.

Screw all the bad reviews. This movie perfectly depicts someone who is lost and without direction. His recently deceased mother tells him to go to Bucharest (he can talk to dead people, but I think it was the directors unique way to show someone who is so numb they can't make their own decisions. he literally asks his mother what he should do). In times of loss it's never a good idea to make spontaneous decisions, but why not? Fear of change makes for a boring life. Once on the plane, his life takes a new direction to a place of adventure and love. Most people wouldn't have been able to handle it and gone back home, but Shia's character stuck with it.
