Charlie Chan in Paris (1935)

Charlie's visit to Paris, ostensibly a vacation, is really a mission to investigate a bond-forgery racket. But his agent, apache dancer Nardi is killed before she can tell him much. The case, complicated by a false murder accusation for banker's daughter Yvette, climaxes with a strange journey through the Paris sewers.

Alright, it was made in 1935. I wouldn't expect the political correctness we are so tuned to today. It's a private detective movie, something that was supposed to be entertaining, not enduringly, profoundly or intellectually stimulating. Well, I take it back. It actually is intellectually intriguing. I was really surprised to come across this series of detective/crime movies made in the '30s that feature a Chinese hero. I will be interested in watching more of them.

Goes along at a fairly good pace, but tends to slow a bit at times. Charlie has a lot of dumb sayings and seems almost too wise. Everyone else seems to have shit-for-brains compared to him. Not horrible, but not great.

In a Paris where everyone speaks perfect english, Charlie Chan makes a stop betweem London and Egypt (which are remarked by other characters, this was chronological based on the series) and solves a somewhat silly story involving Bank bonds, forgeries, and yes, murder. It's not bad, though slightly ridiculous, and everyone laughs as usual at Charlie Chan's silly wit. Best part though is the domestic abuse as french dance at the beginning. Yay for the girl being thrown through the window! Applause!

A solid action episode, featuring a chase through the Paris sewers.
