Best foreign language film from 1997, this dutch film chronicles the life of a young man via flashbacks as he is interrogated for a murder. It's a very Kafka-esque story with themes such as acceptance, success and retribution.

Awesome and somewhat has similarities to Star Wars.

This film won Best Foreign Film at the 1998 Oscars. A Dutch friend took me to see it, and I loved it. If you like really good murder mysteries, well-told stories, foreign films, or all of the above, I recommend Karakter. Good stuff!

Under-watched and under-appreciated gem of a film. This is a Dutch movie that won the 1997 Oscar for Best Foreign Language film, though I don't remember ever hearing about it! This is a very character-driven movie (obviously...), has wonderful period sets and costumes (set in 1930s Rotterdam), and great casting. The lead actor seems like a dead ringer for Robert Downey, Jr. at times. Melancholy pervades this film and it is slow moving, but it works. I just really like this movie.
