Interestingly, it turns out our ancestors created "moving pictures" through shadowing and light-play. Their attempts, as showcased in this documentary, serve as the earliest form of cinema.

The sentiment that best describes life as an archaeologist is 'endlessly fascinating.' There has been no other film that I've yet seen that expresses that sentiment as remarkably as Cave of Forgotten Dreams has. This is probably the closest you will get to the authentic origins of human art. Absolutely unforgettable.

Travelling to Kansas City for the day to see this in 3D was time well spent. The 30,000+ years-old Chauvet Cave drawings are stunning, and Werner Herzog does a good job letting the viewer appreciate these without his personality becoming the focus of the film. At times, I felt like I could reach out and touch the rough, jagged crystal calcium carbonate that seems to cover almost every surface of the cave. And the drawings look as if one might meet the artist sometime and somewhere nearby.

As a student of Archaeology I can only thank the genius of Werner Herzog for giving us the opportunity to glimpse inside the Chauvet cave. To watch this is an almost spiritual experience in itself. I can only imagine what it must be like for the lucky Archaeologists who study the cave and its secrets at first hand. As amazing as experiencing these paintings must be, nothing tugged at my gut more than the clip that showed the 30,000 year old ash markings on the cave roof where individuals had scraped their torches to re-ignite the flames......the charcoal flakes from this action where still on the floor below. My heart beat a little faster in my chest at that point. The phenomenological approach is combined with advanced scientific methods, comparative studies and artefacts and Herzogs talents to give us as clear a picture as possible of what these paintings can tell us about palaeolithic man and his pliable relationship with the spiritual and the material world. Our imagination does the rest. Wonderous.

3D really shows how these extraordinary, almost animated, paintings were created around the cave's contours. And Herzog's narration and music are hugely atmospheric. Granted, it could have done with a lot more editing (including deleting the postscript that equates modern man with some albino crocodiles in a nearby tropical greenhouse - what?). But definitely a one off, both as an experience and a film.
