Excellent documentary highlighting the ongoing struggle for 1st Amendment rights - but from a comedic angle. Interviews include some of my favorites including: Penn Gillette, Lisa Lampanelli, and Gilbert Gottfried. If you love comedy and free speech - this is a MUST see film!

One of the main points of "Can We Take a Joke?" is freedom of speech. The first Amendment protects that right, but the comedians (and I) believe that freedom of speech should be elevated, especially now.

Great defence of the importance of free speech in society, with various examples drawn from comedy. Funny and irreverent stuff from Jim Norton, Gilbert Gottfried, and Lisa Lampenelli. Good context given with the story of Lenny Bruce. Disturbing to hear about the PC trend on college campuses, esp. the one example of an audience member literally grabbing the mike from a student comedian and telling him to "sit the fuck down." Funny, interesting, informative.

Interesting as it is, but it would have been much better had it really grappled with the complexities of the issue it raises rather than presenting it in a cut-and-dried way.

The documentary Can We Take a Joke?, a one-sided look at a multisided issue, does a fine job of defending a comic’s right to perform incendiary material. It would be better if it also at least acknowledged the possibility that some jokes ought not be told.
