Such a smart and profound film. Beautifully shot, amazing performances by Brendan Gleeson and others in the extraordinary cast. The Irish are just so damm bleak. Serious discussion/coffee movie after. Spectacular performances.

Calvary is the second film I've seen this year that I feel confident will have legs to reach the Oscar race. It's not an uplifting film, nor is it particularly a downer. It's right in between⦠walking the safe path, much like Father Lavelle. Only, unlike his character in the film, Gleeson is going to get a lot of due praise.

Great Movie. A movie about a good courageous priest with a big problem. This is a two Kleenex movie.

I rarely give a film 5 stars, but in my view, Calvary merits the highest rating. I encourage fans of great character-driven drama to see this film, if only for Brendan Gleeson's stellar performance as Fr. James. We hear so much these days about priests who have failed. But Fr James is one of the good ones. Of course he's still human, with human frailties. And Gleeson does a fabulous job at making him 3-dimensional. He's someone we'd want to know. There are some good laughs in Calvary, but the subject matter is mostly serious--child molestation, suicide, attempted suicide, loneliness, corruption...And all this in a small town in Ireland. There's an interesting cast of characters, including Chris O'Dowd as a parishioner and town butcher, and Aiden Gillen of Game of Thrones as a creepy atheist doctor. This movie gives viewers a lot to think about.

The secluded setting of the Sligo mountains makes for a magnificent tale of morality and personal faith. Gleeson superbly portrays an infallible messenger of God, trying to come to terms with his sinister thoughts whilst still grappling hold to any remaining faith. This black comedy will leave you contemplating the real meaning of goodness.
