This is one film that completely threw me off. It is an extremely raw portrayal of women's prisons in the 1950s. It has many of the types that you find in prison pictures but the film balances this with a real sense of character.

This was recently released on DVD as part of Warner's Cult Camp Classics; melodrama, sure, but not really camp. Eleanor Parker is remarkable, Agnes Moorehead is God, and Hope Emerson is the Devil.

Surprisingly hard-hitting prison movie, with a terrific lead performance from Eleanor Parker.

Ranked as the best women-in-prison film ever made, but even if this is so it still doesn't make it very good.

Horrific, if not a little depressing, story of a not so bad woman caught up in a crime she didn't want to commit, then sentenced to a prison term. Excellent acting, good storyline, must have shocked the hell out of the society of the times when this came out! Besides, who doesn't appreciate a chick prison flick?
