A nuclear warhead launched by Soviet insurgents protesting the waning Cold War destroys the Ukrainian city of Donetsk. The destruction sets off a race between American and Soviet politicians to prevent a nuclear holocaust. While the U.S. president feverishly works to keep the military and political machine from going into overdrive, various subordinates panic. When the president is believed to be killed in a helicopter crash, zealous advisers take over.

Though there's some problems with it (everyone seems to be walking around after a nuclear blast, is Rebecca Demornay Blind?) , there's some good tension points in this thriller. Some good performances too, especially by James Earl Jones who seems to be hamming it up excessively.

Probably the best TV movie I've ever seen, a scarily plausible spin on the threat of all-out nuclear war. If Russian-American relations keep on the way they're going right now the film's Cold War setting wouldn't even necessarily be out of date yet. Not to mention the 'war on terror'... Powers Boothe, Martin Landau and James Earl Jones are all very good, and the ending is fantastic.

Chilling stuff! Had me glued all the way through. I suppose what's different here is that a lot of movies of this genre take you to the brink at which point some unlikely child hero saves the day. In this one the bombs get dropped and guess what? No-one's happy! Avoid if you have red-neck tendencies.
