Having only just discovered this film thanks to KINO's blu ray release, this is an oddly entertaining take on history that not only challenges the American myth of the wild west and the character known as Buffalo Bill. Paul Newman is perfect in the role of the goofy showman. It is all a show. And Altman's signature style lends itself well to the rambling backstage peak which is as realistic as it is funny. As I understand it, this film failed upon its initial release. That is understandable, but you can't help but think that Altman was thrilled to release this all too honest movie during the US Bicentennial. It may have failed in 1976, but it a fun and interesting experience in 2015. This is not your Mom's Paul Newman movie.

I usually love Westerns but this one was too long and was a little slow. I can see they're telling a story about history, but it just didn't seem exciting enough if that makes sense. Some nice camerawork though and some decent acting from Paul Newman.

Ha ha, if there ought to be one film part of the american national curriculum, this is it. A story about stories about legends, heros, the truths, half truths and the nothing-like-the-truths. Pump up the ego, pump up the ego, bang bang. Oh it's funny too. Or is it too funny? "Thats why stars spend so much time in the mirror, seeing if their good looks and word delivery can overcome their judgement. A star like buffalo bill cody, he makes a judgement, it becomes a commitment, its got to stick, no matter what the risk." "I understand why he lied to me cos he's got to look good in front of his people the same I've got to look good in front of mine."
