Brothers Hypnotic (2014)

For the eight young men in the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, "brotherhood" is literal: they're all sons of anti-establishment jazz legend, Phil Cohran. Cohran and their mothers raised them together on Chicago's South side on a strict diet of jazz, funk and Black Consciousness.

We see Phil's sons honoring him while going their own ways in a years-long effort to find the right pitch.

Lively, funny and at times philosophical, Brothers Hypnotic tackles the challenges of maintaining an independent music career, as well as some knotted generational conflicts, and handles it all with great sensitivity.

A good but not great documentary about the eight children of Phil Cohran and their attempt to gain stardom for themselves. Without knowing if the riches are at the end of the rags, the documentary leads us to an unsatisfying conclusion.

I got bored. The film did not have a strong narrative. Maybe there were too many people and not enough focus on one. I'd like to see a separate film focused just on Phil Cohran.

Brothers Hypnotic introduces the band as a function of their dad, his progeny, his project even as they have also become devoted artists in their own right.
