Two buddies who rise from fly-by-night wildcatters to oil tycoons over a twenty year period both love the same woman. McMasters and Sand come to oil towns to get rich. Betsy comes West intending to marry Sand but marries McMasters instead. Getting rich and losing it all teaches McMasters and Sand the value of personal ties.

The cast is good, but not good enough to save the movie from the dull story. That is, however, until Hedy Lamarr comes in (almost an hour into the movie) and completely sets the screen on fire.

Good, if slightly overly long and slightly miscaset yarn about two oil barons who try to outdo each other, when they're not partnering up that is. Gable and Tracy are great together, and Claudette Colbert provides great fodder for the two to fight over. Not too sure about Hedy Lamarr though as the seductree who woos Gable away from Colbert though.

Often seems like two different movies (with only part two starring Hedy Lamarr). I prefered the first half because the constant reversal of fortunes for the cast, while probably indicative of the world it portrayed, just felt like an attempt at padding out the runtime. A real shame, given the star-studded cast, especially Frank Morgan in a supporting role.

Just a real feel good movie. Nothing too serious and again, Clark Gable and Spencer Tracy prove their greatness.
