Blueberry (2004)

U.S Marshal Mike Donovan has dark memories of the death of his first love. He keeps peace between the Americans and the natives who had temporarily adopted and taken care of him. The evil actions of a white sorcerer lead him to confront the villain in the Sacred Mountains, and, through shamanic rituals conquer his fears and uncover a suppressed memory he would much rather deny.

I saw some of this on SBS last night, and decided I will just have to buy it. Its a shamanic western - and while the western part of the plot/acting drags, the rest of it is a masterpiece!! The imagery they use for the shamanic visions etc was mindblowing... nearly an organic gieger! with the aligators and snakes etc... fucking brilliant! it made me itch to get my pens out and start creating.. i have to have this movie!

Saw this last night. Based on the early graphic novel by the late great Moebius. This is by no means a conventional Western. Ends up being a very strange and cosmic shamanic trip, quite literally! Vincent Cassel is excellent in the starring role, alone with a supporting cast of Colm Meaney, Michael Madsen ( don't be put off by his usual B list roles), Juliette Lewis and Eddie Izzard. Was a British/French co production, shot in some beautiful locations in Northern Mexico. The most psychedelic Western since El Topo, which is probably no coincidence.

If you've never been on a serious psychedelic trip, you may not get this movie. Or more likely, you'll *THINK* you get it, but not really get it. Oh well, your loss.

okay... so rent the movie... watch the first 45 minutes and then skip ahead to the last 30... believe me you won't miss anything... the only things worth watching here are: a) Vincent Cassel b) the surprisingly-also-super-hot young version of Vincent Cassel c) Juliette Lewis's vagina (really!) d) the ending sequence; which is composed of a mano e mano battle entirely taking place within "the mind's eye"... read: really trippy shit... I think the filmmakers were trying to create an heir apparent to 2001's stargate sequence with the final sequence... and they succeeded... worth a rental for this sequence alone... and Vincent Cassel... trying to be a cowboy....

Holy cow! This isn't your typical Western. It has elements of Shamanism in it with great special effects. Very realistic peyote hallucinations. Wait! Was that Quezecoatal?
