Recent college grad Jaime Reyes returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it. It may have a slow start, but once you get into it more, Blue Beetle is a fun superhero movie that stands out from nearly every DCEU movie (including the recent ones in 2023 for sure), with a lot of dazzling effects and battle sequences, and great performances. It might actually be one of my favorite films of the year. I'm not gonna mention anything about the box office because this movie was a win win for me.

In a world of superhero glut, Blue Beetle is a breath of fresh air. Yes, it hits on the same beats of the formula as most movies created today, however it dares to show more heart than your run-of-the-mill superhero flick. It’s filled with great actors that bring life where many movies come up short. Plenty of action, great visuals, both humor and touching moments weave together a well-paced movie. I didn’t know much about Blue Beetle before this movie, but after seeing the movie, I’m a new fan. I hope this is a taste of things to come in the new DC cinematic universe.

Happily, Blue Beetle comes closest to cracking the code by grounding its slam-bang sci-fi shenanigans in familia. Based on the third incarnation of a comic book character who’s been in and out of circulation — published by several different companies — since 1939, this movie’s Latin flavor feels fresh, with welcome bits of political bite and funny takes on the genre’s over-familiar conventions.

Blue Beetle is a successful first step into the new DC universe. It had a similar feel to the comic book adaptations that came out in the 2000s. Being intertwined with Latin culture and prioritizing familial ties make the film emotionally strong. Also, the costume design and transformation moments are GORGEOUS! The action is also good, the soundtrack and song choices are excellent.
