A typical mafia story, so I didn't think it would keep me interested, but the cast was brilliant and the cinematography was top notch for me (shots of the village where the guys came from were amazing). I didn't expect Liu Ye to play such a violent character, but he was just outstanding. He, Daniel Wu, Chen Chang and Shu Qi are the the best cast I could imagine in a Chinese movie.

This movie was well made, but fell a bit short with its over dramatic plot lines and scenes. It had great production value and style, but that's about all it had.

I've never been so bored during a film. This movie doesn't do anything to draw me in and the operatic self indulgent music doesn't help. Over all the film just tries to be Scarface and the Godfather mixed in with each other with a 1920's gangster feel for flavoring.

I didn't watch this shitty dubbed copy that the picture shows. i had to get the hk copy off ebay. This was pretty great. It had a different style than a lot of hk action flicks. i guess that it wasn't really a hk movie, but all about 30's shanghai. well anyway. i liked it. Hopefully this director will keep doing good stuff. Why the hell does this dvd copy only have the english dubbing. that is bizarre, labels stopped doing that a few years ago.
