Sublime Marlène en femme déchirée entre mari, amant, fils et carrière. Féministe, malgré une fin convenue.

Pre-Code Dietrich is as good as it gets. She's got a child in this one, but the movie doesn't suffer or become saccharine because of it. Going from destitute to the toast of Paris in a very short time is hard to buy, but other than that this is life, this is the real stuff. Von Sternberg was a genius.

The ending is sort of tacked on but it works for melodrama. Watch it mostly for well Marlene Dietrich. She'll make you want to be a transient cabaret singer.

Beautifully photographed, excellent story. Marlene Dietrich is magnificent, she expresses so much in her face, a wonderful actress. Good supporting cast. Herbart Marshall, Hattie McDaniel and Sidney Toler are all exceptional. Wonderful production, excellent pacing.
