Richard Dadier is a teacher at North Manual High School, an inner-city school where many of the pupils frequently engage in anti-social behavior. Dadier makes various attempts to engage the students' interest in education, challenging both the school staff and the pupils. He is subjected to violence as well as duplicitous schemes.

The seminal "teacher in a ghetto" story that launched the Rock and Roll Era marked the screen debuts to Sidney Pottier, Vic Morrow and Jamie Farr, Sixty years later, guns have taken the place of knives and the music is rap, but the message is more relevant than ever. Essential.

Although it's a bit sensational at times, this movie is a great entry in the "juvenile delinquent" subgenre. Switchblade wielding students smash a teacher's record collection, jump Glenn Ford in an alley, and threaten the welfare of his wife and child! Vic Morrow and Sidney Poitier are excellent as leaders of rival gangs. Recommended.

A film designed to combat juvenile delinquents that introduced a good portion of the United States to rock, ultimately the cue for fifty years of juvenile delinquency. Oh, if the producers had only known the irony they were about to unleash.
