What emerges from the electronic noise and fussy aesthetic of “BlackBerry” is a compelling portrait of a company that flew too close to the sun.

Quality seemed awfully low to me and I didn't care for the fake doc jiggle of the camera. Performances were fine but the make-up success. All.in all it looked pretty low-rent. I'm guessing the CEO was accurate, but having worked at a Fortune 500 company for 20 years, execs rarely yell like that or are overtly abusive. This guy was unbelievable. This just came off as a lowball Pirates of Silicon Valley. It was okay.

A fantastic cast led by Jay Baruchel and Glenn Howerton tells the sad but true story of the flame-out of the world’s first smartphone and the manchildren who created it. This raucous workplace comedy (think The Office) puts an unexpected lump in your throat.

This is all the makings of Oscar gold, rife with the story beats that The Social Network codified—and even succeeds in some clever elliptical storytelling, the stuff that makes award bodies shiver—but Johnson’s and Raab’s aesthetic consistently pulls the iconism of the story into messier immediacy.

BlackBerry is another movie where we all know the ending, but the fun is in finding out how we got there.
