Biggie & Tupac (2002)

In 1997, rap superstars Tupac Shakur and Christopher Wallace (aka Biggie Smalls, The Notorious B.I.G.) were gunned down in separate incidents, the apparent victims of hip hop's infamous east-west rivalry. Nick Broomfield's film introduces Russell Poole, an ex-cop with damning evidence that suggests the LAPD deliberately fumbled the case to conceal connections between the police, LA gangs and Death Row Records, the label run by feared rap mogul Marion "Suge" Knight.

Shows just how much red tape there is with both their murders, and how much of a freaking piece of crap Suge Knight is.

A decent documentary by a professional documentary film maker who seemed quite out of his element. Broomfield rubbed a lot of his interviewees the wrong way and that caused some problems. There were a few interesting archive clips and a couple interviews which were good -- I can't believe they actually went into prison to interview Suge Knight. The reopening of the case was in part due to the new evidence gathered by Broomfield, so it was cool to see a documentary actually play a part in resolving the issue which probably would have just blown away.

This film did indeed stir up a frenzy with the newly uncovered evidence in the murder case of The Notorious BIG but it ultimately led to nothing. A strong documentary however that tries its best to uncover the truth about the death of two of the 90's biggest stars. The one annoying thing about this film is Broomfield's pronunciation of Tupac's name. Its Tupac Nick, not Tupack.

I knew there was some controversy over the Biggie/Tupac murders but I didn't know the extent of the conspiracy. Fascinating documentary.
