The film—Weitz’s first since 2015’s indie Grandma—feels a little cheap and shortchanged.

The screenplay, by Weitz and Anthony Weintraub, does a good job of fleshing out a large number of characters; even the hostage-takers are portrayed as more than just gun-toting, camouflage-wearing revolutionaries.

Director Paul Weitz is mostly known for lighter, more observational stories like "About a Boy" and "Mozart in the Jungle," and the strongest moments in Bel Canto are the small ones.

A somewhat dull hostage drama centred around Moore and her iffy operatic lip syncing. Not sure what the point of it all is - is it that a) terrorists are people too, or b) music brings all people together? It's never clear, either way. By the time the credits roll you'll realise the time you wasted investing in it.
