Brilliant start, brilliant ending some lax moments at the middle. The background score really let down the movie. I felt it would have been a masterpiece if shortened and music was used more judiciously. Its definitely a must watch, but for me it hasn't reached that level of 'Satyajit Ray" films because of the length and background music.

This is a brilliant social commentary by Benegal.

This film has a meditative approach to story telling that allows the story to unfold without explication. It is an excellent, timeless story performed with restraint. There are only a few minor clues to date the film. The characters are complicated and compelling. The pace, low key acting, and documentary quality (yet beautiful) cinematography lend authenticity to the drama.

Indian art cinema can't get any better than this. Each minute of it was Worth it. Beautiful work by actors and director. Specially shabana azmi.....
