Animal Kingdom (2010)

Joshua "J" is taken in by his extended family after his mother dies of an overdose. The clan, ruled by J's scheming grandmother, is heavily involved in criminal activities, and J is soon indoctrinated into their way of life. But J is given a chance to take another path when a cop seeks to help him.

As it shocked me in every depth, David MichÃ´d's debutorial film, along with its spot on acting from every member of its cast (special mention to Ben Mendelsohn's chilling portrayal of a man gone way way south), kept me horrified and at the same time, filled me with awe. Every scene kept me literally on edge as to what will come next and satisfied me that what I expected was the very least of what MichÃ´d chillingly saw in every detail of this thought-provoking drama. This film shot straight up to first on my list of great films of all time.

A slow burning thriller that completely gets under your skin. Understated and realistic, with brilliant preformances from a largely unknown cast.A first time director and low budget film but far better than many of the over the top US films of teh same genre. Go see.

Animal Kingdom is certainly a slow burn, a very deliberate and engrossing slow burn. There is a sense of fear and dread that is expressed by the narrator early in the film that carries until the final credits. This suspense is maintained by great acting, a great score, engaging and interesting direction and camera work and an overall atmosphere which is the sum of all these components. The writing and direction from first timer David Michod seems like the work of an accomplished veteran, and that isn't even mentioning the performances he gets from his actors, which are incredible and elevate the film beyond any crime flick I've seen recently. Pope is one of the best villains I've seen in a long time, Mendelsohn's presence as this character is ominous, to say the least. Weaver is similarly excellent in the role of the deranged mother/grandmother, as is newcomer Frecheville as the lead. All in all, this is the best Australian film since the Proposition.

One of the finest films I have seen in a long, long time. Just exquisite, you really must see this film.
