Animal Kingdom (2010)

Joshua "J" is taken in by his extended family after his mother dies of an overdose. The clan, ruled by J's scheming grandmother, is heavily involved in criminal activities, and J is soon indoctrinated into their way of life. But J is given a chance to take another path when a cop seeks to help him.

A fantastically tense Aussie crime drama that (appropriately) sinks its teeth into you with no intention of letting go. Much of the credit belongs to writer/director David MichÃ´d whose intense, spare script and sure handling of the story make him someone to keep an eye out for in the future. In addition, the actors all fare very well, with Joel Edgerton, Ben Mendelsohn, and Jacki Weaver turning in stand out performances. Also of note is the movie's great, moody soundtrack. In my opinion, it's a crime that this film wasn't nominated for the Best Picture Oscar. In a field of 10 films, it certainly deserved the recognition. Easily one of the best of 2010.

Organized around interactions between characters vying for supremacy, each turn in the plot was unexpected and fascinating yet predetermined by the characters.

Animal Kingdom is certainly a slow burn, a very deliberate and engrossing slow burn. There is a sense of fear and dread that is expressed by the narrator early in the film that carries until the final credits. This suspense is maintained by great acting, a great score, engaging and interesting direction and camera work and an overall atmosphere which is the sum of all these components. The writing and direction from first timer David Michod seems like the work of an accomplished veteran, and that isn't even mentioning the performances he gets from his actors, which are incredible and elevate the film beyond any crime flick I've seen recently. Pope is one of the best villains I've seen in a long time, Mendelsohn's presence as this character is ominous, to say the least. Weaver is similarly excellent in the role of the deranged mother/grandmother, as is newcomer Frecheville as the lead. All in all, this is the best Australian film since the Proposition.

Wow. Powerful film! Such a surprise. I didn't think the trailers were very good and I didn't even realize it had a 97% on RT. I can understand the praise. It's unpredictable. Emotional. Very refreshing. Quite an intense piece of filmmaking. It's on Instant Viewing! Give this a try!
