Allure (2018)

Plagued by the abuse of her past and the turmoil of failed intimate encounters, Laura struggles to find a lover and a sense of normalcy. Her beacon of hope comes in sixteen year-old Eva, a talented pianist disillusioned by the life her mother imposes upon her. An unlikely relationship is formed between the two and Eva becomes an obsession to Laura. In light of Eva's unhappiness, Laura convinces her to runaway to her house and they soon find themselves caught within an intense entanglement. Manipulation, denial and codependency fuel what ultimately becomes a fractured dynamic that can only sustain itself for so long.

Allure is powered by Wood's intense charisma. Laura deploys her magnetic gaze as a weapon, though the destruction she wreaks is most often directed at herself. The character's situation is always untenable, and as it collides with inevitability, the co-writer-director Sanchez brothers lose the tight grip of control they've maintained over the story.

Allure reminded me of the Anthony Hopkins film "Proof" about mental illness and questioning one's sanity -- I wanted to like Allure and watched it many times (streaming) in search of more than an adolescent prop for a showcase of Evan Rachel Wood's manipulations. I found some greater appreciation for the silent expressiveness of Julia Sarah Stone. I still wished for more focus on her character, as the viewer could identify with her struggles, instead of the series of disjointed vignettes about Laura and her past. It felt like a dramatic documentary on the Sanchez brothers and ERW's on the roots and viral nature of abusive relationships, where the viewer is expected to be appalled and enlightened at the same time. Enjoyment optional.

Despite a threadbare screenplay featuring overfamiliar motifs, the movie gains traction as a result of a committed, riveting performance by Evan Rachel Wood.

While it's impossible to recommend this blisteringly dark film across the board (I think you can tell if it fits your mood or taste), it does haunt, rendering it a psychological thriller that more than lives up to its billing.
