Allure (2018)

Plagued by the abuse of her past and the turmoil of failed intimate encounters, Laura struggles to find a lover and a sense of normalcy. Her beacon of hope comes in sixteen year-old Eva, a talented pianist disillusioned by the life her mother imposes upon her. An unlikely relationship is formed between the two and Eva becomes an obsession to Laura. In light of Eva's unhappiness, Laura convinces her to runaway to her house and they soon find themselves caught within an intense entanglement. Manipulation, denial and codependency fuel what ultimately becomes a fractured dynamic that can only sustain itself for so long.

Allure reminded me of the Anthony Hopkins film "Proof" about mental illness and questioning one's sanity -- I wanted to like Allure and watched it many times (streaming) in search of more than an adolescent prop for a showcase of Evan Rachel Wood's manipulations. I found some greater appreciation for the silent expressiveness of Julia Sarah Stone. I still wished for more focus on her character, as the viewer could identify with her struggles, instead of the series of disjointed vignettes about Laura and her past. It felt like a dramatic documentary on the Sanchez brothers and ERW's on the roots and viral nature of abusive relationships, where the viewer is expected to be appalled and enlightened at the same time. Enjoyment optional.

We’re shown damning cycles feeding on each other that prove worse when their hypocrisy and irony is acknowledged. And both Wood and Stone will make you scream and cry depending on what they allow or ignite.

Allure sets itself up to be an erotic thriller, but is all the better for avoiding cheap bunny boiler tropes, and instead focusing on character.

Tightly written and sensitively rendered, the devastating film is propelled by masterful performances, led by a bewitching Wood in the role she was born to play.

Jon Frosch 19 Jan 2018

Sluggish and somber, with nary a wink, chuckle or sigh of relief to mitigate the misery, the film is a slog. That's unfortunate, because the writer-directors have a strong visual sense, and, in Wood, a magnetic lead.
